The Ortofon 2M Black is the flagship of the classic 2M Series and is designed for listeners who want to retrieve the maximum amount of information from their records. Its nude Shibata diamond has a long, narrow contact area with the groove walls, enabling it to trace fine textures and high-frequency information with exceptional precision. The result is open, dynamic and highly detailed music reproduction. With an output voltage of 5 mV, the cartridge can be connected directly to a conventional MM phono input.

Advice and application

The fine Shibata profile requires accurate installation. Set the tracking force to 1.5 grams and check the overhang, offset angle, azimuth and, where adjustable, tonearm height. The Ortofon cartridge alignment protractor can help you align the cartridge correctly.

Use an MM phono input with a 47 kΩ load resistance and a total load capacitance of 150-300 pF. This is the standard 2M Black for half-inch top mounting, rather than the Premounted, Verso or 2MR version. When the diamond becomes worn, the cartridge body can be retained and fitted with an original Ortofon 2M Black replacement stylus.
