The Who – Tommy is one of the most important and influential rock albums in music history. Originally released in 1969, the double album was largely written and conceived by guitarist Pete Townshend and became one of the best-known rock operas of all time.
The album tells the surreal story of Tommy, a boy who cannot hear, speak or see and eventually becomes a spiritual and cultural phenomenon. The Who combine the continuous narrative with powerful rock, acoustic passages, dramatic transitions and unforgettable compositions including Pinball Wizard, I’m Free and We’re Not Gonna Take It.
Roger Daltrey’s commanding vocals, Pete Townshend’s guitar playing, John Entwistle’s powerful bass lines and Keith Moon’s explosive drumming make Tommy an album that continues to sound impressive and innovative decades after its original release.
For this exclusive release, Analogue Productions has presented the album as a numbered UHQR edition on two 200-gram Clarity Vinyl records. The worldwide edition is strictly limited to only 3,500 copies.
Chris Bellman mastered the album at Bernie Grundman Mastering using the original analogue master tapes. The records were subsequently pressed at Quality Record Pressings, a pressing plant renowned for its strict quality control and premium audiophile vinyl production.
This particular edition of Tommy is pressed on 200-gram vinyl, not 180-gram vinyl. A heavier record is more rigid and generally less susceptible to warping than a conventional vinyl record weighing approximately 120 to 140 grams.
Weight alone does not guarantee superior sound quality. The mastering, source material, vinyl formulation and precision of the pressing process are equally important. This UHQR edition combines all of these elements: original analogue master tapes, careful mastering, high-quality pressing and the special carbon-free Clarity Vinyl formulation.
Because conventional carbon black is not added to Clarity Vinyl, the material is designed to produce a quieter background. This can make subtle details, dynamic contrasts, spatial information and natural tonal colours easier to hear.
The famous closing section See Me, Feel Me forms part of We’re Not Gonna Take It and is not listed as a separate track on this edition.
