Cold Fact, the legendary debut album by Rodriguez, receives a premium audiophile release from MFSL – Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab. This numbered edition is spread across two 180g vinyl records playing at 45RPM and is strictly limited to only 4,000 copies worldwide.
Originally released in 1970, Cold Fact went from a largely overlooked American debut to an internationally celebrated cult album. Songs such as Sugar Man, Crucify Your Mind, I Wonder and Inner City Blues combine folk, psychedelic rock and soul with Rodriguez's direct and socially conscious songwriting.
Cold Fact was produced and arranged by Dennis Coffey and Mike Theodore and recorded in Detroit. Rodriguez's distinctive vocals and acoustic guitar are surrounded by electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, strings and horns, creating an unusually rich and occasionally psychedelic musical backdrop.
The album initially achieved little commercial success in the United States, yet Rodriguez later developed an extraordinary following in countries including South Africa and Australia. Decades later, the documentary Searching for Sugar Man brought his remarkable story and music to a much wider international audience.
Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab remastered Cold Fact at its California mastering facility. For this edition, MFSL specifies a mastering chain consisting of a 1/4-inch / 15 IPS analog copy transferred to DSD 256, followed by an analog console and the cutting lathe.
The album is spread across two records and plays at 45 revolutions per minute. This gives the grooves more physical space than a conventional 33⅓RPM presentation. Combined with careful mastering and cutting, this format can provide excellent transient definition, separation and spacious stereo reproduction.
The records are pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing and housed in a premium Stoughton gatefold jacket. The release is strictly limited to 4,000 individually numbered copies.
A 180g record weighs approximately 180 grams and is generally thicker and more substantial than many standard vinyl pressings. The additional weight provides a solid feel and can help the record sit securely on the turntable. Weight itself does not guarantee better sound quality, however: the mastering, cutting and pressing quality remain the most important factors.
In this MFSL edition, heavyweight 180g vinyl is combined with 45RPM playback and a carefully controlled mastering and pressing process, making the release particularly attractive to demanding listeners and serious vinyl collectors.
