Gustav Mahler - Symphony No. 2 in C Minor “Resurrection” is one of the monumental masterpieces of the late-Romantic orchestral repertoire. This premium Esoteric Hybrid-SACD ESSD-90326 presents Sir Georg Solti conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Chorus, joined by soprano Isobel Buchanan and contralto Mira Zakai.
The celebrated 1980 Decca recording has been newly DSD-remastered at the Esoteric Mastering Center in Japan for this audiophile release. It is an especially attractive edition for classical music enthusiasts and audiophiles who want to experience a large-scale orchestral recording on a high-quality hi-fi system.
Mahler's Symphony No. 2 in C minor, commonly known as the Resurrection Symphony, develops from its dramatic opening movement towards a vast finale for orchestra, soloists and chorus. Its enormous contrast between intimate passages and massive orchestral climaxes places exceptional demands on both the performers and the playback system.
Sir Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra bring precision, dynamic power and orchestral authority to this recording. The performance was recorded from 5 to 7 May 1980 at Medinah Temple in Chicago and was originally released by Decca in 1981.
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Chorus are joined by Isobel Buchanan, soprano, and Mira Zakai, contralto.
For ESSD-90326, the recording was newly remastered at the Esoteric Mastering Center. Esoteric's audiophile reissue programme uses an uncompromising mastering environment incorporating premium electronics, including equipment from the company's flagship Grandioso range.
The objective is to preserve and reproduce the recording's spatial information, dynamic contrasts, orchestral layering and fine musical detail as convincingly as possible. Mahler's Second Symphony is particularly suitable for demonstrating these qualities, from quiet instrumental passages to the enormous chorus and orchestral forces of the finale.

A Hybrid-SACD contains two separate information layers. Its conventional CD layer can be played on virtually any standard CD player. The disc also includes a high-resolution SACD layer using the DSD format, intended for SACD players and compatible universal disc players.
This makes a Hybrid-SACD highly versatile: standard CD playback remains available while a suitable SACD player can access the high-resolution layer. The SACD layer of ESSD-90326 is presented in stereo.
