After two albums with the Steve Miller Band, Boz Scaggs decided to focus on his solo career. Jann Wenner, a close friend and publisher of Rolling Stone, helped him secure a contract with Atlantic Records. The label arranged for him to record in Muscle Shoals, where he made his label debut with a legendary group of session musicians who had previously worked with Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and many other Southern soul legends. Among them was guitarist Duane Allman, who had a major influence on the recording sessions and helped turn Boz Scaggs’ self-titled album into an iconic work. “Boz Scaggs” marks a turning point in the American artist’s musical direction, incorporating soul and R&B elements while showcasing his versatility as a musician.
Released in 1969, the album was loved by critics but initially failed to reach a wider audience. Despite profound and soulful songs such as “I’m Easy” and “I’ll Be Long Gone”, it was not conceived as a straightforward blue-eyed soul record. Its broad stylistic range, which also included country and blues elements, seemed to overwhelm listeners at first. Only after Scaggs’ songs began receiving frequent radio airplay did commercial success follow. “Loan Me A Dime” has since become regarded as a blues-rock classic.
For the “Atlantic 75 Series”, Analogue Productions now presents the definitive deluxe version of “Boz Scaggs”. This audiophile reissue pays tribute to a timeless album that has influenced and inspired subsequent generations of musicians.
