Coltrane was known for pushing the boundaries of jazz and expanding the possibilities of the saxophone as an instrument. Coltrane’s improvisations on My Favorite Things from 1961 are characterized by intensity, virtuosity and sheer creativity, marking an important turning point in his career.
The recording was made during the same recording sessions that also produced much of the albums Coltrane Plays the Blues (1962), Coltrane's Sound (1964) and Coltrane Legacy. The title track is a modal interpretation of the Rodgers & Hammerstein song My Favorite Things from the film The Sound of Music.
Coltrane is accompanied by McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass and Elvin Jones on drums.
