To celebrate the 70th anniversary of “Blue Suede Shoes,” Intervention Records is releasing the first long-player in the new “Sun Records Hi-Fi Series”: Carl Perkins’ groundbreaking 1957 rockabilly classic “Dance Album Of Carl Perkins,” now finally available as a Hybrid SACD.
“Dance Album Of Carl Perkins” is packed with legendary tracks that have become rock standards and have been covered by artists such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles and many others. As outstanding as many of these interpretations from the past decades may be, arguably no one has ever performed these songs with more swagger than Carl Perkins on “Dance Album Of Carl Perkins.”
Album highlights naturally include “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Honey Don’t,” “Matchbox” and “Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby,” the cover versions of “Only You” and “Wrong Yo Yo,” as well as 5 bonus tracks that are not included on the LP version.
Intervention Records worked closely with Sun Records and the Archive Team at Iron Mountain to assemble a completely new set of master tapes for this release. When Shelby Singleton acquired Sun Records from the legendary Sam Phillips in the late 1960s, the original 7” single master tapes were transferred to numerous different sets of 1/4” tapes.
It is no longer possible to identify a single tape as “THE master” for any particular song. However, Sun and Shane Buettner of IR spent many hours listening to the tapes and determining the absolutely best-sounding tape version for each individual song. Under our guidance, Kelly Pribble, Mark Berger and Scott Delaney at Iron Mountain carried out flat 1/4” transfers to a newly created set of 1/4” A/B reels for this release.
For the CD/SACD bonus tracks, Iron Mountain created DSD transfers directly from the analogue master tapes. Gus Skinas of the Super Audio Center prepared Kevin Gray’s mastered DSD files for the original repertoire and mastered the bonus tracks in the DSD domain, using Gray’s mastering notes as a guide.
Naturally, IR paid no less attention to the album cover, and very special thanks go to Joe Goldmark, who provided us with his extremely hard-to-find original cover as a colour reference. The album cover was, of course, restored by IR art director Tom Vadakan and faithfully reproduced by the experts at Stoughton Printing.
