WiiM Pro Plus review – compact streaming with serious everyday performance

WiiM Pro Plus review – compact streaming with serious everyday performance

Introduction

The WiiM Pro Plus is a compact network streamer designed to bring modern streaming features to an existing amplifier, powered speakers or external DAC. It is small, affordable and impressively feature-rich. Through the WiiM Home app, users gain access to popular streaming services, internet radio, multiroom playback, EQ settings and several wireless playback options.

What makes the Pro Plus stand out is that WiiM has not only focused on features, but also improved the analogue audio section. Compared with the standard WiiM Pro, the Pro Plus uses a better DAC stage, an upgraded analogue input and a more capable analogue output section. This makes it suitable not only as a digital transport, but also as a complete streamer-DAC connected directly to an amplifier or active speakers.

Build quality and finish

The WiiM Pro Plus is compact, light and practical. Its plastic housing does not have the premium feel of more expensive streamers with metal cases, front-panel displays or large control knobs. Even so, the unit feels solid enough for normal daily use. The rear connections are clearly laid out and the compact shape makes placement very easy.

The design is understated rather than luxurious. This is not a product intended to dominate a rack visually. It is made to do its job quietly and efficiently. Users looking for a more premium physical interface may prefer the WiiM Ultra or a more expensive network player, but those who value simplicity will appreciate the Pro Plus.

Ease of use and features

The WiiM Pro Plus is particularly strong when it comes to usability. Setup through the WiiM Home app is quick and logical. The app provides access to streaming services, network playback, internet radio, multiroom control, firmware updates and detailed sound adjustment.

Supported playback options include AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, DLNA, Amazon Music Casting and Roon Ready. The Pro Plus also offers an analogue RCA input, optical digital input, analogue RCA output, optical output and coaxial digital output. This allows it to work as a streamer-DAC, as a digital transport feeding an external DAC or as part of a multiroom system with an analogue source.

It is important to note that the USB-C port is for power only. The unit does not support USB audio output or USB storage. It also lacks HDMI ARC, a headphone output, a phono input and built-in amplification.

Sound quality / performance / user experience

For its price class, the WiiM Pro Plus sounds surprisingly mature. Through the analogue RCA output, the internal AKM DAC delivers a clean, balanced and detailed presentation. Vocals are well positioned, instruments remain easy to follow and the overall sound is controlled without becoming harsh or overly analytical.

Bass performance is tight and well organised, though not excessively powerful. Compared with more expensive streamers, the Pro Plus can sound a little lighter in scale, depth and authority. However, in many real-world hi-fi systems, the difference is smaller than the price gap might suggest. With a good integrated amplifier or active speakers, the Pro Plus offers a very convincing listening experience.

Used as a digital transport through optical or coaxial output, the Pro Plus is also very capable. If you already own a high-quality external DAC, you can bypass the internal DAC entirely. In that setup, the advantage over the standard WiiM Pro becomes smaller, because the main strength of the Pro Plus is its improved analogue section.

Comparison with similar products

Compared with the WiiM Mini, the Pro Plus offers more connectivity and is much better suited to traditional stereo systems. Compared with the standard WiiM Pro, the Pro Plus is most worthwhile when the analogue input or output will be used. Its upgraded DAC and ADC make it the more complete solution for users who do not want to add a separate DAC.

Compared with the WiiM Ultra, the Pro Plus misses features such as HDMI ARC, touchscreen control, subwoofer output, phono input and broader system integration. The Ultra is better suited as a central streaming preamplifier, while the Pro Plus is the more compact and cost-effective choice for straightforward high-quality streaming.

Against more expensive streamers from brands such as Bluesound or Cambridge Audio, the WiiM feels simpler in build and offers fewer physical controls. Still, its app, platform support and sound quality make it remarkably competitive for the price.

Who is this product for?

The WiiM Pro Plus is ideal for users who want to modernise an existing amplifier or powered speaker system without replacing their entire setup. It is also a strong option for critical hi-fi listeners who want a compact streamer-DAC with wide streaming support and solid analogue performance.

It is less suitable for users who need HDMI ARC, a built-in amplifier, a headphone output, a large display or a phono stage. Those who already use a high-quality external DAC and only need a digital transport may also consider whether the standard WiiM Pro is sufficient.

Pros

  • Very complete network streaming feature set
  • Strong analogue sound quality for the price
  • Clear and capable WiiM Home app
  • Supports many streaming protocols
  • Optical and coaxial digital outputs
  • Analogue input and output
  • Roon Ready and multiroom capable
  • Compact and easy to place

Cons

  • Plastic case feels functional rather than premium
  • No HDMI ARC
  • No USB audio output
  • No built-in amplifier
  • No headphone output
  • No phono input
  • Limited physical controls and visual feedback

Conclusion

The WiiM Pro Plus is one of the most convincing compact streamers in its price category. It combines an excellent app, broad streaming support and surprisingly strong analogue performance in a small device that fits easily into almost any existing hi-fi system.

Its limitations are clear: no HDMI ARC, no USB audio, no built-in amplifier and no luxury finish. Yet within its intended role, it performs exceptionally well. For users who want affordable, flexible and good-sounding streaming, the WiiM Pro Plus is an easy recommendation.
