STAX SR 007S with STAX SRM D50 for refined electrostatic listening

A modern interpretation of the celebrated 007 series

The STAX SR 007S continues a product line that occupies an important position in the history of the company. Its shape and brown finish preserve much of the recognisable character of earlier 007 models, while the internal construction benefits from modern manufacturing methods. STAX renewed both the diaphragm and the fixed electrodes, while the openings in the newly designed large circular electrodes are twenty percent smaller than those used in the preceding models. Precise etching is intended to improve acoustic behaviour and reveal subtle musical information with greater clarity, without removing the substantial and resonant presentation associated with the series. The result is aimed at listeners who want detail to remain connected to body, atmosphere and the natural flow of a performance.

Why the STAX SRM D50 is a logical technical partner

An electrostatic headphone cannot be operated correctly from a conventional headphone socket. Its extremely light diaphragm is suspended between two electrodes and requires a dedicated bias voltage as well as a suitable amplified signal. The STAX SR 007S uses a bias voltage of 580 volts and the STAX SRM D50 also provides a 580 volt bias output, making the two products a technically appropriate combination within the STAX system. The SRM D50 also performs two important tasks in a single compact component, since it combines an electrostatic driver with a digital to analogue converter. This can remove the need for a separate DAC and helps create a clean, organised listening area with fewer individual components and fewer connections between them.

Fine detail, spatial precision and lasting comfort

The SR 007S uses the newly developed STAX ARS structure. Its arc is formed from one continuous piece of stainless steel, a construction intended to increase rigidity and reduce unwanted vibration. Hinged moving sections and rotating ear cushions help the headphone adapt to a wide range of head shapes without requiring a complicated adjustment process. The areas of the cushions that touch the skin are made from sheepskin, while additional absorbing material inside the pads is intended to create a quieter background and a more precisely organised sound space. The headphone weighs approximately 430 grams without its cable. Its 2.5 metre cable is detachable, which can simplify maintenance and gives the design greater long term flexibility if a cable ever needs to be replaced.

Connect a computer, streamer, disc player or analogue source

The STAX SRM D50 can serve as the central component of a listening system with several different sources. Its digital connections include USB type B, optical input and coaxial RCA input. A stereo RCA analogue input can accept a suitable disc player, streamer, DAC or turntable system with a separate phono stage. The integrated ESS converter supports digital audio up to PCM 384 kHz and DSD 5.6 MHz. An illuminated VU meter on the front displays the level of the incoming signal and gives the compact unit a distinctive traditional appearance. The enclosure measures approximately 192 by 67 by 268 millimetres, weighs 4.5 kilograms and incorporates a four millimetre non magnetic aluminium cover together with an R core transformer selected for reduced leakage flux.

Who should consider this complete STAX combination

The STAX SR 007S and STAX SRM D50 combination is particularly relevant for listeners who enjoy complete albums, carefully recorded concerts and music in which small changes in dynamics, position and ambience are important. The open construction of the SR 007S does not isolate the listener from surrounding noise and sound may remain audible to other people nearby, so a quiet dedicated listening position will produce the most rewarding experience. The SRM D50 adds convenience by bringing digital conversion, source selection and electrostatic drive into one compact unit. Together they form a complete system that combines specialist technology, comfort and a distinctive visual identity. Discover through Hi Stands how this STAX combination can become the centre of a personal headphone listening system.
