Product description

The Who - Live At Leeds on 180g 45 RPM double vinyl

The Who - Live At Leeds is one of the most influential live albums in rock history. Recorded at the University of Leeds on 14 February 1970, the album captures Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon delivering an exceptionally energetic performance. This premium edition from Analogue Productions is presented as a 180-gram double LP cut at 45 RPM.

The six tracks from the original LP sequence are spread across four record sides. This provides extended performances such as My Generation and Magic Bus with sufficient groove space while preserving the intensity and momentum of the concert.

A legendary live album by The Who

Live At Leeds was recorded during a period in which The Who had developed into an extraordinarily powerful live band. Roger Daltrey’s expressive vocals, Pete Townshend’s direct guitar playing, John Entwistle’s melodic bass lines and Keith Moon’s explosive drumming create a performance that sounds both precise and unpredictable.

The band combines original material such as Substitute, My Generation and Magic Bus with forceful versions of Young Man Blues, Summertime Blues and Shakin’ All Over. The recording retains the raw character of the concert while providing enough clarity to follow the individual instruments and the interaction between the four musicians.

Mastered from the original analogue master tapes

Chris Bellman mastered this edition at Bernie Grundman Mastering directly from the original analogue master tapes. The mastering aims to preserve the dynamics, impact and natural tonal character of the original concert recording.

The records were manufactured at Quality Record Pressings, a specialist pressing plant known for carefully produced audiophile vinyl. The release is housed in a premium Stoughton Printing old-style tip-on gatefold jacket with a scuff-resistant matte finish.

What is 180-gram vinyl?

A 180-gram vinyl record is heavier and more rigid than many standard pressings. Its additional weight creates a solid record that sits securely on the turntable and is less susceptible to warping. Weight alone does not guarantee superior sound quality, however. The source, mastering, lacquer cutting and pressing quality remain essential. This Analogue Productions edition combines 180-gram vinyl with specialist mastering and a carefully manufactured QRP pressing.

Why was this edition cut at 45 RPM?

At 45 RPM, a greater length of groove passes the stylus each second than on a conventional 33⅓ RPM record. This can provide the cutting engineer with additional space for dynamics, fine detail and demanding musical passages. Spreading the album over two LPs and four sides allows the extended live performances to be presented without unnecessary restriction.
