Stevie Nicks was already a superstar, closely associated with several million-selling Fleetwood Mac albums—not to mention her own groundbreaking solo debut, Bella Donna, and its highly successful follow-up, The Wild Heart. The artist's third album, Rock A Little, released in 1985 on Modern Records, further elevated Nicks's profile and cemented her position as a key part of 1980s pop history. While Rock A Little bears all the hallmarks of a typical mid-'80s LP, Nicks and her team spared no effort in giving the music a spacious sound characterized by lush melodies, high-tech percussion, reverberating vocals, sampler keyboards, and layered, refined accents. Rock A Little reached the Top 20 and number 12 on the US Billboard 200 just two weeks after its release. Two weeks later, the album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales exceeding 1,000,000 copies. In the United Kingdom, Rock A Little was certified gold. "Talk To Me," "I Can't Wait," and "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You?" were released as singles. A fourth single, "Imperial Hotel," was released exclusively in Australia.
Recording for Rock A Little began in early 1984 in a church-turned-studio in Dallas. By the end of these months-long sessions, Nicks had completed about six songs that she felt could be developed further. However, Nicks rejected these recordings and parted ways with her longtime producer and partner, Jimmy Iovine. She resumed work on the project in late 1984. After Iovine's departure, Keith Olsen, Rick Nowels, and Nicks herself took over production. Heartbreakers organist Benmont Tench, bassist Bob Glaub, Greg Phillinganes, and session guitarists Waddy Wachtel, Les Dudek, and Danny Kortchmar were invited to the sessions, along with about two dozen other musicians. According to Mick Fleetwood in his autobiography, the recording of this album cost approximately $1 million.
To celebrate its 40th anniversary, MFSL presents Rock A Little for the first time in audiophile reference quality: mastered at MoFi Studio in California, this Hybrid SACD, strictly limited to 3,000 numbered copies, sets new standards in terms of three-dimensionality, transparency, headroom and dynamics, and is bursting with colour and detail.
