Rush - A Farewell to Kings is presented as a premium numbered MFSL Hybrid-SACD UDSACD 2325. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab brings Rush's progressive-rock classic to an audiophile physical format aimed at listeners who appreciate careful mastering, dynamics and musical detail. Its hybrid construction allows the disc to be played on a compatible SACD player while the conventional CD layer can also be read by standard CD players.
Originally released in 1977, A Farewell to Kings is Rush's fifth studio album and captures Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart during a particularly adventurous period. The Canadian trio combines powerful rock with complex time signatures, extended compositions, acoustic instruments and synthesizers.
Rush travelled to Rockfield Studios in Wales to record the album, giving the band a different environment in which to develop its increasingly ambitious arrangements. Alongside electric guitar, bass and drums, the record makes use of twelve-string guitars, classical guitar, Minimoog, bass synthesizers and an expanded range of percussion.
Closer to the Heart became one of Rush's most enduring songs, while the expansive Xanadu and closing Cygnus X-1 underline the band's progressive and experimental character.
This edition is released by MFSL - Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab as a numbered Special Edition Hybrid-SACD. The reissue was remastered at MoFi's California studio with particular attention to the album's layered arrangements and wide dynamic contrasts.
That makes A Farewell to Kings especially suited to an audiophile reissue. Quiet acoustic sections alternate with powerful electric passages, while percussion, synthesizers and multiple guitar textures add considerable depth to the arrangements.
A Hybrid-SACD combines two playback layers on a single physical disc. The SACD layer contains high-resolution DSD audio and can be accessed by an SACD-compatible player. A conventional CD layer is also included and can be played by standard CD players.
