Should the question of the most famous jazz album of all time ever appear on the television show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”, this Miles Davis album from 1959 would certainly be a strong contender. Entire books have already been written about Kind Of Blue, and what other album has been released in so many different editions? The band had not even rehearsed a single track in full before Davis brought them into the studio while the recording was already running. Perhaps jazz heavyweights such as John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb did not need to, because Kind Of Blue became a classic regardless. Davis himself, however, remained true to his reputation as an eccentric and described the album as a failure.

Mobile Fidelity had announced this title a long time ago, but the release had to be postponed again and again because the licensor Columbia Records, now part of Sony Music, was unable to locate the correct tape. Apparently, there are dozens of tape copies in existence. Once the proper master was finally secured, Shawn R. Britton and Rob LoVerde set to work together. They used the newly upgraded DSD system in Sebastopol, California, to make every possible improvement during the mastering process. Sonically, the album now possesses a grace and, at the same time, a compelling decisiveness in every single note that had never been heard before. There is analog tape hiss, yet at the same time a presence of the musicians that previous releases simply never achieved.
