The FiiO K13 R2R is a versatile desktop DAC and headphone amplifier designed for music enthusiasts who want the distinctive characteristics of R2R conversion combined with modern connectivity and substantial balanced output power. At its heart is FiiO's proprietary fully differential 24-bit R2R DAC architecture, built around a total of 192 high-precision thin-film resistors.
The K13 R2R goes well beyond a basic DAC/AMP. It supports USB, coaxial, optical and Bluetooth sources, while the front panel provides both 6.35mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced headphone outputs. On the rear, RCA and balanced XLR line outputs allow the K13 R2R to serve as a headphone amplifier, standalone DAC, fixed-level source or variable preamplifier.
Instead of relying on a conventional delta-sigma DAC chip, FiiO uses its own four-channel fully differential 24-bit R2R resistor-array DAC. Each channel employs 48 precision thin-film resistors, giving a total of 192 resistors with 0.1% accuracy and low 30ppm temperature drift.
R2R conversion approaches digital-to-analogue conversion differently from the delta-sigma technology found in many modern DACs. It does not automatically make one architecture superior to another, but it gives the K13 R2R a clearly differentiated technical design and listening character. FiiO also maintains differential signal processing throughout the audio chain, including the DAC, low-pass filtering, volume control and headphone amplification.
The FiiO K13 R2R provides both NOS (Non-Oversampling) and OS (Oversampling) operation. NOS mode retains the original sampling rate during decoding, making it particularly interesting for listeners who prefer a more direct R2R approach. OS mode globally upsamples the signal to 384kHz.
Neither setting is universally preferable. The ideal choice depends on the recording, headphones, system and personal taste, making the ability to switch between NOS and OS a genuinely useful feature.
Through its 4.4mm balanced headphone output, the K13 R2R can deliver up to 2400 + 2400mW into a 32-ohm load in High Gain. At 300 ohms it provides up to 600 + 600mW. The 6.35mm single-ended output delivers up to 1220 + 1220mW into 32 ohms.
Three gain levels – Low, Medium and High – make it easier to match the amplifier to different headphones and sensitive IEMs. FiiO specifies an adaptable headphone impedance range of 8 to 350 ohms for both outputs.
USB audio processing is handled by the XMOS XU316 platform. USB decoding supports PCM up to 384kHz/32-bit and DSD256. Coaxial input supports PCM up to 192kHz/24-bit and DSD64, while optical accepts PCM up to 192kHz/24-bit.
Two USB-C connections provide additional installation flexibility. Both the rear and side USB-C ports can be used for USB decoding.
For wireless playback, the K13 R2R incorporates a Bluetooth 5.4 receiver supporting LDAC, AAC and SBC. LDAC enables higher wireless audio bitrates with compatible smartphones, tablets and digital audio players.
This gives the K13 R2R a useful combination of wired audiophile connectivity for focused listening and convenient Bluetooth reception for everyday use.
The built-in 10-band parametric EQ provides detailed control over frequency response. It can be used to tailor a headphone to personal preferences or apply frequency-response corrections. Settings can be managed using FiiO Control.
A 1.1-inch LCD displays information including sampling rate, volume, gain and output mode. Dual-knob operation, the supplied infrared remote control and adjustable RGB lighting make the K13 R2R easy to operate from both a desktop and a listening position.
In PO mode, the front headphone outputs are active. In LO mode, the rear RCA and balanced XLR outputs operate at a fixed line level. Selecting PRE mode makes the rear analogue output level adjustable through the K13 R2R's volume control.
This means the K13 R2R can be connected directly to active speakers, a power amplifier or an integrated amplifier with suitable analogue inputs.
Both the K13 R2R and FiiO K11 R2R use FiiO's proprietary 24-bit R2R technology. The K13 R2R, however, is the considerably more comprehensive model. It adds substantially higher balanced output power, Bluetooth 5.4 with LDAC, balanced XLR line outputs, a 10-band PEQ, remote control and broader connectivity.
The K11 R2R therefore remains an attractive compact entry into R2R audio, while the K13 R2R is better suited to users looking for a more powerful and versatile centrepiece for a desktop or full hi-fi system.
The K13 R2R uses a substantial aluminium unibody enclosure. A transparent skylight window on the top provides a view of part of the internal R2R circuitry and is complemented by adjustable lighting.
The K13 R2R is available in black and silver. It measures approximately 210 × 188 × 42mm including its feet and weighs around 980g, giving it a stable presence on a desk or equipment rack.
In addition to its internal AC power supply, the K13 R2R accepts an external 12V DC supply rated at 2.5A or higher. Users wishing to experiment with an upgraded power supply can combine it with the FiiO Darkside Pro linear power supply. Any audible difference from changing the power supply will depend on the complete system and listening environment.
The K13 R2R is particularly attractive to listeners who want a powerful desktop DAC and headphone amplifier while deliberately choosing an R2R conversion architecture. Its combination of headphone outputs, RCA, XLR, USB, coaxial, optical and Bluetooth connectivity allows a single component to perform several roles within a modern audio system.
