Johnny Hartman – I Just Dropped By To Say Hello is presented on a premium Hybrid SACD from ESOTERIC. This Japanese audiophile edition, catalogue number ESSJ-90329, has been newly mastered in DSD and showcases Johnny Hartman’s warm, velvety baritone with exceptional naturalness, clarity and refinement.
Hartman is accompanied by an outstanding group of jazz musicians including Hank Jones, Illinois Jacquet, Kenny Burrell, Jim Hall, Milt Hinton and Elvin Jones. This makes the release particularly attractive to Johnny Hartman enthusiasts as well as collectors of classic vocal jazz and historic Impulse! recordings.
I Just Dropped By To Say Hello was recorded on October 9 and 17, 1963 at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. The album followed shortly after Hartman’s celebrated collaboration with John Coltrane and has become one of the defining recordings of his career.
At the heart of the album is Hartman’s deep, warm baritone and his controlled, intimate vocal style. Songs including Charade, In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning, Stairway to the Stars and the title track benefit from his relaxed phrasing and unmistakably personal delivery.
The accompanying musicians are equally impressive. Hank Jones plays piano, Milt Hinton double bass and Elvin Jones drums. Illinois Jacquet appears on tenor saxophone, while Kenny Burrell and Jim Hall provide the guitar parts.
For this ESOTERIC ESSJ-90329 Hybrid SACD, the recording has been carefully remastered in DSD. ESOTERIC is renowned for its meticulous approach to classic jazz and classical recordings, with particular attention to natural tonal balance, dynamics, spatial information and fine musical detail.
These qualities are especially valuable on an intimate vocal jazz recording. Hartman’s voice is reproduced with presence and body, while the piano, guitars, double bass, saxophone and drums remain clearly defined within a coherent and natural soundstage.
A Hybrid SACD contains two separate data layers. Its conventional CD layer can be played on virtually any standard CD player. In addition, the disc contains a high-resolution SACD layer using DSD audio, which can be accessed with a SACD player or compatible universal disc player.
This allows a Hybrid SACD to combine the broad compatibility of the Compact Disc format with the increased resolution and refinement available from the SACD layer.
