“Coltrane Jazz” was the first album to reach store shelves after “Giant Steps.” The recordings took place in November and December 1959. With the exception of “Village Blues,” which was not recorded until late 1960, Coltrane performed with pianist Wynton Kelly and the rhythm section of Miles Davis: Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. The atmospheric “Village Blues” features McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums and Steve Davis on bass – much of the line-up that, together with Jimmy Garrison on bass, would form the foundation of Coltrane’s most influential and beloved albums of the 1960s.
The quartet performs three standards, but the band reaches its peak with Coltrane’s original material, especially “Harmonique” with its melodic leaps, saxophone lines in the upper register and the winding, slightly Eastern-tinged main riffs of “Like Sonny,” which is dedicated to Sonny Rollins.
To mark the 75th anniversary of Atlantic Records, Analogue Productions honours “Coltrane Jazz” with a sonically outstanding reissue.
