Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, Devo’s groundbreaking 1978 debut album, is presented by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab as a numbered audiophile reissue on two 180g LPs. Carrying catalogue number MFSL 2-627, this edition plays at 45 RPM and divides the album’s eleven tracks across four sides.

Working with producer Brian Eno, Devo combined angular guitars, synthesizers, mechanical rhythms and deadpan social satire into a sound far removed from conventional 1970s rock. Tracks such as Uncontrollable Urge, Jocko Homo, Mongoloid and the radical reconstruction of (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction helped establish the album as an important early new-wave recording.

For this numbered MFSL edition, the ¼-inch/15 IPS analogue master was transferred to DSD 256 before being routed through an analogue console to the cutting lathe. The records are manufactured at Fidelity Record Pressing and housed in a premium Stoughton Printing gatefold jacket.

Why choose this MFSL edition?

Dividing the album across two records and using a playback speed of 45 RPM gives the grooves more physical space than a conventional single LP cut at 33⅓ RPM. This provides favourable conditions for reproducing dynamics, transients, spatial information and small details within the recording.

Devo’s tightly controlled rhythms, layered synthesizers, sharply defined guitars and unusual effects are particularly well suited to careful mastering and high-quality vinyl playback. The individually numbered presentation also makes this release attractive to collectors.

What is 180g vinyl?

A 180g record is thicker and heavier than many standard vinyl pressings. Its additional weight gives the record a solid and stable construction and may make it less susceptible to warping when correctly handled and stored.

Weight alone does not guarantee better sound. The source, mastering, cutting process and pressing quality remain the most important factors. In this MFSL edition, 180g vinyl is combined with audiophile mastering, 45 RPM playback and a two-record configuration.
