Carly Simon’s number-one hit “You’re So Vain” is still regarded as one of the greatest songs ever recorded. For decades, it kept audiences guessing about the identity of its self-absorbed protagonist. That question may have remained the only mystery on the artist’s otherwise autobiographical album. “No Secrets” marked Simon’s commercial breakthrough, with nearly all songs written or co-written by her. The album became a milestone of the 1970s singer-songwriter movement, spent five weeks at number one on the US Billboard 200, and was quickly certified gold. “You’re So Vain” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks and held the number one position on the Adult Contemporary charts for two weeks. The second single, “The Right Thing to Do,” reached number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 4 on the Adult Contemporary charts. The album received four Grammy nominations and was officially certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on December 12, 1997.
Simon’s candid and honest lyrics were brilliantly enhanced by Richard Perry’s elegant production, which added new depth and dynamism to her music. Recording took place at London’s famed Trident Studios between September and October 1972. Jimmy Ryan (guitar, bass), Bobby Keys (tenor saxophone), Lowell George (guitar), Peter Robinson (piano), Bill Payne (organ), Klaus Voormann (bass), Andy Newmark and Jim Keltner (drums), among many others, formed the core ensemble. Kirby Johnson handled the string and horn arrangements and conducted the orchestra together with Paul Bruckmaster (orchestration, synthesizer, and arrangements for orchestra, synthesizer, and woodwinds). Perry paid particular attention to Simon’s vocals, resulting in a more sensitive and captivating performance than on her earlier productions. Prominent guest musicians including Paul and Linda McCartney, Mick Jagger, and her then-husband James Taylor also contributed to the album’s success.
