Carly Simon’s intense second album is bold and deeply autobiographical: Anticipation heralds the arrival of a major artist. The gold-certified album explores themes of love, relationships, and longing while reflecting on the challenge of preserving one’s identity while simultaneously committing to a partner. Released in November 1971 on Elektra Records, the title track and first single Anticipation quickly became a Top-20 hit in the United States. In 1973, the song — describing Simon’s mood while waiting for a date with Cat Stevens — was used as the soundtrack for several Heinz ketchup television commercials. I've Got To Have You, written by Kris Kristofferson, was issued as a single in Australia and reached number six on the Australian charts in 1972. Released before the singer-songwriter movement reached its peak, Anticipation remains a remarkable songwriting achievement. The iconic cover — featuring the singer standing before the gates of Queen Mary’s Garden in Regent’s Park — serves as a visual metaphor for the album’s content.
