“Somethin’ Else” from 1958 is Cannonball Adderley’s only Blue Note album and would probably have gone down in music history for the presence of Miles Davis alone. But it is more than that; for this album, Davis stepped into the role of sideman. No, Adderley’s work is regarded today as a milestone in jazz because the chemistry between the band members is right, because of the enthusiasm of the performers, and because of the sophisticated arrangements — not to mention the first-class production.
The interpretations of “Autumn Leaves” and “Love for Sale” on “Somethin’ Else” are now considered the definitive recordings of both titles. In “Autumn Leaves,” Adderley and Davis each bring in different approaches, yet they sound perfectly unified. Davis’s muted trumpet and Adderley’s lush alto saxophone merge into a performance regarded as a prime example of expression, sophistication, and musical flow. Blues and romance pour out of their wind instruments.
A masterpiece of jazz.
