“My Woman”, the third album by Angel Olsen, marked the definitive breakthrough for the exceptionally gifted singer-songwriter. Included by Pitchfork, NPR, NME, Mojo, Rolling Stone, The Guardian and other renowned media outlets in their lists of the “Best Albums of 2016,” “My Woman” is an emotionally compelling exploration of identity, love and hope, viewed through the lens of one of the leading voices of her generation.
On “My Woman”, the St. Louis-born artist moves away from the reflective folk and vintage-inspired sounds she explored on her first two albums. The ten songs cover a wide stylistic spectrum, ranging from synth-pop and chamber music to country-western, rock ’n’ roll and torch ballads. Her lyrics and arrangements reveal atmospheric variety and timelessness.
Olsen initially composed many of the songs on piano, later replacing the instrument on some tracks with synthesizer and/or Mellotron parts. “My Woman” wears many of its influences — Stevie Nicks, Nancy Sinatra, Roy Orbison, Dolly Parton, The Ronettes and even a nod to Mudhoney — quite literally on its tongue. Olsen is blessed with a voice, phrasing and timing that any vocalist would envy. Her instinct for when and where to place hooks, and how to shape melodies, proves just as pronounced as her sense of drama and dynamics. Olsen sings with a distinct fearlessness that at times seems to stop time, allowing her love stories to lay bare thoughts, memories and longings with penetrating authenticity.
Lovingly mastered from the original tapes at MoFi’s California studio and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing, this 33 RPM LP presents the classic for the first time in audiophile reference quality. Olsen’s captivating vocals now possess impressive clarity and openness. “My Woman”, recorded largely live at Vox Studios in Los Angeles, overflows with atmosphere and shines with a previously unheard sense of immediacy, spaciousness and detail. The numbered LP, strictly limited to 2,000 copies and released in celebration of MFSL’s tenth anniversary, comes in a gatefold sleeve featuring the iconic artwork, faithfully reproduced by Stoughton Printing.
