Van Morrison, equally a soulful singer with an innocent aura and a wild-eyed poet and magician, ranks among the true innovators of pop music – a restless seeker whose incantatory vocals and alchemical fusion of R&B, jazz, blues, and folk produced what is often regarded as perhaps the most spiritually transcendent work in the rock ’n’ roll canon: Moondance! Hailed by many critics as one of the greatest albums of all time, Morrison’s record became an immediate commercial success upon its release on February 27, 1970. Following the disappointing performance of his first Warner Bros. album Astral Weeks (1968), Morrison moved with his wife to upstate New York, where he began writing songs for Moondance. There he met the musicians who would join him in recording the album in August and September 1969 at A & R Studios in New York City. On Moondance, Morrison moved away from the abstract folk-jazz compositions of Astral Weeks, favoring formally structured songs that he entirely wrote and produced himself. The vibrant rhythm-and-blues/rock sound became the style for which he would be best known throughout his career. Moondance played a significant role in establishing Morrison as a major pop artist, while several tracks, including the title song, became radio staples in the early 1970s. In Rolling Stone’s updated list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, Moondance is ranked at number 120.
