The Sound of Jazz is closely associated with the legendary CBS television programme of the same name, broadcast live from Studio 58 in New York on 8 December 1957. The programme brought together an extraordinary group of musicians including Count Basie, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Billie Holiday, Jo Jones and Coleman Hawkins.
The album itself is not the soundtrack of the television broadcast. It was recorded during the preceding rehearsal at Columbia's 30th Street Studio on 4 December 1957. Columbia Records released the album in 1958, and this studio session provides the source for the carefully remastered Analogue Productions edition.
The original 3-track tape was used for this reissue, with Ryan K. Smith handling the mastering at Sterling Sound. The result preserves the spacious presentation, dynamics and musical cohesion of this remarkable historic jazz session.
