The self-titled solo debut of the most musically adventurous member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is a true masterpiece. Bluesy rock, Latin grooves, and the raw, unfiltered energy of Stephen Stills made the album, released in November 1970, an instant success. Worldwide Top 10 chart positions and the hit “Love The One You're With” quickly earned the album, produced by Bill Halverson, a gold certification. In 1974, it was ranked number 70 on the list of greatest albums of all time by the editors of NME and was later included in the renowned book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Contributions from Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton further enhanced the album’s success.
Stills’ songs stand shoulder to shoulder with those of his CSNY bandmates, yet here his own distinct personality shines through. His genre-crossing approach never feels disjointed. The production is warm and immersive, with Stills playing most of the instruments himself. The second single, “Sit Yourself Down”, perfectly captures the album’s atmosphere: he doesn’t just play the guitar—he commands it, layering his virtuosity over structures that feel both meticulously crafted and effortlessly cool.
As part of the “Atlantic 75 Series,” Analogue Productions honors this masterpiece with a sonically outstanding reissue, carefully mastered by Bernie Grundman.
