Explore the STAX SR-X1 with a circular electrostatic driver, open-back housing, OFC cable, sheepskin pads and a lightweight metal frame. Read more.
The STAX SR-X1 is an entry-level electrostatic earspeaker inspired by the circular shapes of landmark STAX products such as the SR-1 and SR-X. Rather than simply copying an earlier design, it combines that visual heritage with a newly engineered driver, updated headband construction and contemporary wearing comfort. Made in Japan, the SR-X1 is intended for music enthusiasts and discerning listeners who value a flat, neutral and finely focused presentation during dedicated home listening. Its open-back format supports an airy listening experience, while the 234-gram body weight helps make the headphone suitable for extended sessions.
A newly developed medium-sized circular push-pull electrostatic transducer forms the acoustic foundation of the STAX SR-X1. It uses a high-precision etched fixed electrode and is installed directly inside the enclosure, with joints between surrounding parts kept to a minimum. This rational construction is designed to improve accuracy and focus. At the rear, curved open slits with varying thickness allow sound waves to move smoothly through the housing while helping to reduce unwanted distortion. STAX specifies a frequency response of 7 to 41,000 Hz, a capacitance of 110 pF including the cable and a 580 V DC bias requirement. The supplied 2.5-metre cable uses six parallel OFC conductors in a wide, low-capacitance layout.
Metal is used strategically within the frame and arc structure to increase rigidity and suppress unnecessary resonance. At the same time, the integrated arc and head pad assembly remains light enough to reduce fatigue during long listening periods. The ear pads combine genuine sheepskin on the skin-contact area with artificial leather around the mounting section, while newly selected memory foam improves conformity and fit. A replaceable cable arrangement supports practical servicing and long-term ownership. As with other STAX electrostatic earspeakers, the SR-X1 must be connected to a compatible STAX driver unit rather than a conventional headphone output. Match it with the correct 580 V bias energizer to explore its neutral and open electrostatic presentation.
