Just one year after Nat King Cole had dissolved his trio and turned toward vocal pop music, he entered the studio to record “Penthouse Serenade” – a quiet, reflective instrumental album of standards. The legendary singer recorded the album between 1951 and 1952 with John Collins (guitar), Charlie Harris (bass), and Bunny Shawker (drums), supported by Jack Costanzo (percussion). Produced by Lee Gillette, the album was originally released in September 1952 as a 10-inch LP on Capitol Records. The album confirmed that despite his commercial success as a vocalist, Nat King Cole remained an exceptionally gifted pianist. In 1955, as the 12-inch LP increasingly dominated the market, Cole recorded four additional tracks with Collins, Harris, and drummer Lee Young (brother of Lester Young) for a reissue of “Penthouse Serenade,” now expanded to 12 tracks – his first full-length LP.
To celebrate the album’s 70th anniversary, AudioNautes Recordings presents a sonically stunning reissue of the 1955 Capitol Records pressing. Carefully mastered from the original analog tapes, pressed at Vinyl de Paris using the One-Step process on transparent 180-gram vinyl and cut at 33 RPM, this release demonstrates how magnificent stereophonic mono recordings can sound. Enjoy “Nat King Cole At The Piano: Penthouse Serenade” in previously unheard sound quality – and act quickly, as this limited edition will sell out fast.
