Nancy Wilson / Cannonball Adderley brings together two exceptional jazz personalities: Nancy Wilson’s warm and expressive voice and the swinging quintet led by alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley. Recorded in New York in 1961, the album was originally released by Capitol Records in February 1962. This AudioNautes Recordings reissue is presented as a high-quality 180g vinyl LP.
Wilson approached her vocals as a relaxed third horn, an idea that can be heard throughout her natural interaction with Cannonball Adderley, cornet player Nat Adderley, pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes. Vocal performances alternate with instrumental pieces, giving the album a varied and engaging character.

Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley had already performed together before entering the studio for this album. Adderley encouraged Wilson to move to New York and develop her recording career. Their musical familiarity lies at the heart of the session: Wilson’s sophisticated phrasing complements Adderley’s melodic alto saxophone and the energetic playing of his quintet.
The sessions took place in New York on 27 and 29 June and on 23 and 24 August 1961. The album was produced by Tom “Tippy” Morgan and Andy Wiswell. Following its original release, it reached number 30 on the US album chart and became an enduring vocal-jazz favourite.
