For Winds of War and Peace, Lowell Graham conducts the National Symphonic Winds in a program of stirring marches. The Liberty Fanfare was composed for the centennial celebration of the Statue of Liberty in 1986 – one of the most spectacular celebrations in American history. Samuel Barber’s Commando March from 1943 is his first orchestral work. Roger Nixon’s Festival Fanfare March was awarded by the American Bandmasters Association in 1973 as an outstanding composition.
The highly acclaimed recordings by David Wilson are a true delight for discerning listeners. The head of what is likely the world’s most exclusive loudspeaker manufacturer began recording musicians and music he admired in 1977. Always acoustic, always unamplified. For Winds of War and Peace, he used a minimal Sennheiser microphone setup and the Wilson Ultramaster, a heavily modified Studer tape machine with specially developed electronics by John Curl. Wilson’s goal: to get as close as possible to the sound and music he recorded. By 1995, 33 recordings had been made (27 of which were released), reflecting how Wilson preferred to experience live music. The remastering for the hybrid SACD from Analogue Productions was carried out by Kevin Gray.
