The Austrian conductor Josef Krips was one of the great exponents of the Viennese School. He began his conducting career at the age of 19 as Felix Weingartner's assistant at the Vienna Volksoper. Interrupted by the Second World War, he was one of the few who were not allowed to collaborate with the Nazis and quickly resumed his work in 1945, conducting various prestigious orchestras, including the London Symphony from 1950 to 1954. He also made this recording of Franz Schubert's 'Great', his last symphony, with the orchestra at London's Kingsway Hall in 1958.
The remastering for Analogue Productions was carried out by Willem Makee.
