Intervention Records continues its “Sun Records Hi-Fi Series” of essential titles from the legendary Memphis label — this time with a stunning reissue of “Johnny Cash With His Hot and Blue Guitar!”, the debut LP from one of country music’s most influential icons. Originally released on October 11, 1957, the album features such classics as “I Walk The Line,” which held the number one spot on the country charts for six non-consecutive weeks before reaching the top 20 on the Billboard pop charts; “Cry, Cry, Cry” (#14 on the country charts); “So Doggone Lonesome” (#4 on the country charts); and “Folsom Prison Blues,” which would top the country charts over a decade later when Cash recorded the song for his groundbreaking 1968 live album, At Folsom Prison. The album was recorded between September 1954 and August 1957 under the supervision of ace producer Sam Phillips.
“I never expected to hear Johnny Cash’s iconic voice on Intervention Records,” said label founder Shane Buettner. “And I don’t think music fans everywhere have ever heard Johnny Cash’s voice or that famous Sun Studio sound as clearly and accurately as they do on this new 45-RPM mono recording. It’s almost like taking a trip back to 1950s Memphis.” Accompanied by his “Tennessee Two”—Luther Perkins on lead guitar and Marshall Grant on double bass—and enhanced by Phillips’ signature slapback echo, which gave Cash’s signature “boom-chicka-boom” sound its driving force, “Johnny Cash With His Hot and Blue Guitar!” is the album that introduced many to Cash’s warm baritone voice.
As part of the Sun Records Hi-Fi Series, "With His Hot And Blue Guitar" was fully analog remastered by the legendary Kevin Gray at CoHEARent Audio, using the original analog tape sources from the label's archives. The result is impressive and demonstrates how fantastic mono recordings can sound when specifically remastered for playback on modern stereo cartridges. This Intervention Records LP reissue was pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Gotta Groove Records and cut at 45 rpm. Befitting its status, "Johnny Cash With His Hot And Blue Guitar!" comes in a classic Stoughton Printing sleeve, complete with the iconic album art.
This new edition proves once again how impressive mono recordings can sound when specially remastered for playback on modern stereo cartridges.
