"The Well" is the title of this Jennifer Warnes album from 2001. It had been nine years since "The Hunter" and Ms. Warnes was dissatisfied with her record company and decided to produce an album on her own account, which she had had in mind for a long time. It should not be about catchy pop melodies, but about quieter and more emotional songs that tell little stories from life and carries the profound images of these songs with enormous composure.
This reissue of the album includes three tracks not previously included. Tracks five and six were recorded together with the full album, but were not originally released. The last track is a duet with Bill Medley, with whom Jennifer Warnes had sung the worldwide hit "I've had the Time of my Life" from the movie Dirty Dancing. The song does not belong musically to this album, but Jennifer Warnes really wanted to see it on this release, since her duets are always said to have a certain magic.
This version has been reworked by Bernie Grundman and comes as a 24-carat gold CD in a hardcover booklet with lyrics. Sonically, this version plays even better than the early SACD version, creating a wonderfully smooth sonic space with free-floating instruments and a haunting vocal.
The inspiration for this album was a visit to Jacob's Well in Texas. This "well" is the opening of an underground cave system with a powerful outpouring of fresh water, designated by early Native American peoples as a sacred place of rebirth.
