The recording of Harry Belafonte's performance at Carnegie Hall in New York on April 19 and 20, 1959, is undoubtedly a classic that belongs in every well-stocked audiophile collection. Together with his band and a 47-piece orchestra, Belafonte succeeded in captivating the audience – and more than 60 years later, this is still the case, albeit only in your own living room or at audio fair presentations, which is still fantastic – fans and audiophiles agree on this. Originally released on RCA Victor, the double LP remained in the charts for over three years and was nominated for “Album of the Year” at the 1959 Grammy Awards.

At the time of recording, the American singer, whose father was from Martinique and mother from Jamaica, was already playing an important role in the Hollywood film business. So it was easy for the organizer to sell out Carnegie Hall with his name. Nevertheless, no one was really prepared for the spectacular way in which Belafonte drew the assembled audience into the music. This is another reason why the concerts – benefit events for the New Lincoln School and Wiltwyck School – are among the most legendary live recordings in music history.
