After Peter Gabriel left the band, the remaining members of Genesis were determined to carry on. The departure of their legendary frontman weighed heavily: in their search for a new lead singer, they reviewed an incredible 400 (!) audition tapes. But why look far afield? Drummer Phil Collins ultimately took over the microphone and convinced the band that the difficult search could finally be laid to rest. Accompanied by producer David Hentschel, the band entered Trident Studios. In the end, it was the powerful performance of “Squonk” that paved the way for Collins to become the band’s undisputed new lead singer.
Surprisingly, “A Trick Of The Tail” fit seamlessly into Genesis’ success story. The album was a commercial success in both the United Kingdom and the United States, and it was also positively received by critics. Today, this milestone is regarded on the same level as Genesis classics such as “Dance On A Volcano” and “Squonk.” Over four decades, Genesis has left an indelible mark on the music world with an astonishing 150 million albums sold.
For the "Atlantic 75 Series," Analogue Productions is now releasing the definitive deluxe edition of “A Trick Of The Tail.” This audiophile reissue pays tribute to a progressive rock classic that has inspired artists ranging from Elbow and The Flaming Lips to Jeff Buckley.
