The Reiner Sound' is an excellent introduction to the work of Fritz Reiner. The recordings were made on 3 November 1956, 2 March and 13 April 1957. Together with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Hungarian-born conductor produces a clear, balanced, rhythmically precise, metrically controlled sound at the highest musical level. He keeps his personal rhetoric to a minimum, letting the compositions of Ravel and Rachmaninoff speak for themselves. Rachmaninoff's 'Isle Of The Dead' is an overwhelming orchestral spectacle with a beguiling dynamic range. Ravel's Rhapsodie Espagnole is a similarly stirring experience, dazzling and painted in every conceivable acoustic colour.
This hybrid multi-channel SACD is not to be confused with the earlier Bertelsmann Music Group SACD release. The recordings for the new RCA series have been remastered by Ryan Smith; the stereo mix has been created from the original 3-channel recordings.
