The Doobie Brothers - What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits on MFSL 180g 45RPM Double LP

Originally released in 1974, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits is one of the Doobie Brothers’ most varied albums. The band’s signature blend of rock, country and R&B is enriched by soulful horns, warm guitars and layered vocal harmonies. It includes the US number-one hit Black Water, alongside favourites such as Another Park, Another Sunday and Eyes of Silver.

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab presents the album as a numbered audiophile edition on two 180g records cut at 45RPM. Mastering was performed by Krieg Wunderlich, with the records pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing in California. A premium Stoughton Printing gatefold jacket completes this collectable presentation.

From analogue master tape to the new vinyl cut

MFSL documents the following mastering chain for this edition: a 1/4-inch, 15 IPS Dolby A analogue master transferred to DSD 256, followed by an analogue console and the cutting lathe. This is therefore not an entirely analogue production; the DSD 256 conversion is a documented part of the mastering process.

Why two LPs at 45RPM?

Spreading the album across four sides and playing it at 45RPM provides more physical space for the grooves than a conventional 33⅓RPM edition. Combined with careful mastering and pressing, this can benefit transient clarity, stereo imaging and dynamic range. Your turntable must be set to 45RPM when playing this edition.
