“All For You” is a tribute album to the Nat King Cole Trio, released in 1996, before Diana Krall became a superstar of the jazz scene. Despite the commercial success of her later albums, it is “All For You” – Krall’s third album – that continues to impress critics to this day. The deeply personal piano interpretations on a Steinway grand piano in Hamburg, the subtle yet high-caliber band accompaniment, and Krall’s almost eerily present voice testify to the Canadian musician’s profound fascination with the work of legendary singer and pianist Nat King Cole.
Prior to recording in New York in October 1995, Diana Krall had been on tour for months with guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Paul Keller. She was convinced that the magic of the Nat King Cole Trio’s work could only be captured by a cohesive band, rather than a group of studio musicians assembled for the session. It is rare in jazz to arrange a song with both precision and accessibility without the use of drums – “All For You” is a masterclass in this approach. Only on “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams” does Steve Kroon’s percussion assume a prominent role.
The Hybrid SACD, limited to 1,000 numbered copies and released by Universal Music, allows this remarkable album – originally issued by Impulse! Records and GRP Records – to shine in renewed acoustic splendor, offering an audiophile feast for fans of intimate and emotionally compelling jazz albums.
