Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, Devo's groundbreaking 1978 debut album, is released by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL/MoFi) as a numbered Hybrid SACD. Mobile Fidelity uses the original master tapes as the source for this audiophile reissue.
Produced by Brian Eno, the album combines new wave, rock, electronics, angular rhythms and Devo's unmistakable satirical approach. Tracks including Uncontrollable Urge, Jocko Homo, Mongoloid and the band's radical interpretation of (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction helped establish Devo as one of the most distinctive groups to emerge from the late 1970s.
This MFSL edition carries catalogue number UDSACD 2317 and is housed in premium mini-LP-style packaging.
Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab is known for carefully produced audiophile reissues with particular attention paid to source material and mastering. For this edition, MFSL states that the original master tapes are used as the source.
The album's synthesizers, guitars, percussion, unusual effects and tightly structured arrangements make it particularly suitable for detailed playback on a high-quality audio system.
Its individually numbered presentation and mini-LP-style packaging also make this edition attractive to collectors as well as Devo enthusiasts.
A Hybrid SACD combines two playback layers on a single disc. Its standard CD layer can be played on a conventional CD player, while the SACD layer is intended for compatible SACD players.
This provides broad playback compatibility while allowing listeners with suitable equipment to access the DSD-based SACD layer.
Released in 1978, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! was Devo's debut album and became an important record in the development of early new wave.
Working with producer Brian Eno, Devo combined rigid rhythms, guitars, synthesizers and social satire into a style unlike conventional rock of the period. The group's reconstruction of The Rolling Stones' (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction remains one of the clearest examples of its unconventional approach.
