Contrary to prevailing trends—hip-hop, electronic dance music, and indie rock dominated radio in the late 1990s—Dave's True Story still managed to stand out. The New York duo, consisting of singer Vicky Flint and guitarist and songwriter David Cantor, offered a refreshing alternative to the charts with their jazzy hipster pop. Cantor's songs on "Sex Without Bodies," the duo's debut album for Chesky Records, are witty, sophisticated, and cinematic, peppered with literary references. Highlights include the captivating title track, the moving "Ned's Big Dutch Wife," about a woman with a shocking double life, and the original, jazzy cover of Lou Reed's classic "Walk On The Wild Side."
The recording took place at St. Peter's Church in Chelsea and is a unique gem in the Chesky Records catalog. As part of the "Chesky Original Masters" series, Evosound now presents an excellent reissue of this magnificent album. The Hybrid SACD beautifully showcases Chesky's renowned production and recording techniques and comes with a booklet including new liner notes.
