Crosby, Stills & Nash was a folk-rock supergroup consisting of American singer-songwriters David Crosby and Stephen Stills, together with English singer-songwriter Graham Nash. Their self-titled 1977 album marked a return to the harmony-soaked idealism that established the trio’s popularity; it reached number 2 on the charts, behind Fleetwood Mac’s megahit Rumours.
According to AllMusic, the songs on CSN show “great lyrical maturity and compositional complexity compared with earlier albums, from a much more innocent time”. “Just a Song Before I Go” was the last of Graham Nash’s radio-friendly acoustic songs and became a top-ten single. “See the Changes” and “Dark Star” were among the best that Stephen Stills had to offer, while David Crosby contributed three classics from his distinctive body of work: “Shadow Captain”, “Anything at All” and the beautiful “In My Dreams”. Nash’s multi-voiced “Cathedral” is a recollection of an acid trip in Winchester Cathedral, which he experienced at the age of 32.
Groundbreaking musical perfection deserves a distinctive sound and first-class packaging.
