Audio-Technica AT33xMLB dual moving-coil cartridge with nude Microlinear stylus, boron cantilever and resonance-controlled die-cast zinc base. Read more.
The Audio-Technica AT33xMLB is a dual moving-coil stereo cartridge from the extensively redesigned AT33x range. It is intended for discerning vinyl listeners who want to uncover subtle recorded information while retaining convincing weight and warmth through the midrange and lower frequencies. Its nude Microlinear stylus works with a solid tapered boron cantilever to trace intricate groove modulations with accuracy. This configuration makes the cartridge especially relevant for well-engineered turntables used to reproduce layered acoustic music, orchestral recordings and carefully produced albums where separation, tonal texture and spatial organisation are important.
A notable development in the AT33x series is the use of die-cast zinc in the cartridge base. The rigid foundation is designed to reduce unwanted resonance and provide a stable mechanical interface between the cartridge and tonearm. Fine groove movements are read by the nude Microlinear stylus and transferred through the stiff boron cantilever to the dual moving-coil generator. Audio-Technica has also introduced a newly developed suspension mechanism using piano wire. Its slightly lower dynamic compliance is intended to support more substantial presentation through the mid-bass and lower midrange while maintaining the tracking precision required for complex passages and delicate musical transitions.
The AT33xMLB is particularly suited to classical works with many simultaneous instruments, refined studio recordings and records manufactured from the late 1970s onward, when production and cutting techniques increasingly supported high-resolution playback. Careful installation remains essential: cartridge alignment, tracking force, tonearm height and phono-stage settings should all be checked according to the equipment being used. A compatible moving-coil phono input or suitable amplification solution is required, and keeping both records and stylus clean will help preserve consistent tracking. Consider the AT33xMLB when upgrading a turntable system that would benefit from greater detail without sacrificing musical body.
