Product description

Audio-Technica AT33xEN – a warm, full-bodied dual moving coil cartridge

The Audio-Technica AT33xEN is a dual moving coil stereo cartridge from the extensively revised AT33x range. Designed as a capable all-round performer, it is intended for vinyl listeners who value warmth, weight and musical flow while still expecting the small details contained in a record groove to remain clearly audible. Its balanced character makes it suitable for a broad selection of recordings, including vocal music, jazz, orchestral works, rock and modern studio productions. Rather than emphasising one part of the spectrum, the AT33xEN is engineered to present music with a substantial midrange and lower-frequency foundation, making it a practical upgrade for discerning listeners building a carefully matched analogue playback system.

A notable development is the use of die-cast zinc in the cartridge base, a first for this product family. The added structural control is intended to suppress unwanted resonances and improve the expressive quality of the mid-to-low frequency region. Groove contact is handled by a 0.3 x 0.7 mil nude elliptical stylus attached to a rigid, tapered duralumin cantilever. Because the diamond is mounted directly rather than bonded to a separate shank, the assembly can respond accurately to small groove variations. The elliptical profile offers dependable tracing of musical information, while the stiff cantilever helps maintain control during high-frequency passages, transients and densely arranged sections of a recording.

Audio-Technica has also developed a new suspension mechanism that uses piano wire to improve the accuracy with which the stylus follows the record groove. Its slightly reduced dynamic compliance is intended to produce a more substantial sonic presentation, particularly through the lower midrange, without losing the fine information expected from a moving coil design. Correct installation remains essential: the cartridge should be carefully aligned, operated at the manufacturer’s recommended tracking settings and connected to a suitable MC phono stage or compatible step-up solution. Regular record cleaning and gentle stylus care will help preserve consistent tracking. Match the AT33xEN thoughtfully with your tonearm and phono electronics to hear how its warm, controlled presentation can enhance a well-balanced vinyl system.
