On the evening of November 29, 1958, on the stage of the Kurhaus in Scheveningen, Netherlands, when Art Blakey took the microphone and said, “I would like to take a moment, on behalf of the Jazz Messengers and myself, to wish you a good evening,” everyone knew they were witnessing a historic moment. Pianist Bobby Timmons had just composed the legendary “Moanin'”, and saxophonist Benny Golson the famous “Along Came Betty”, which the Jazz Messengers blended with compositions by their illustrious contemporaries Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. The essence of jazz stood on stage that evening, and this long-forgotten performance is finally brought back to life with this vinyl edition. “Jazz Magazine” wrote: “This particularly short-lived line-up of the Jazz Messengers under Benny Golson’s leadership is, for some, simply the best! Never before had the group achieved this balance between passion, elegance and swing, this ideal between freedom and refinement. And never again would it fully rediscover this osmotic chemistry. A superbly restored album. Not to be missed! Under any circumstances!”
Frédéric D’Oria-Nicolas, the musical treasure hunter behind The Lost Recordings, describes the path the label had to follow to make this release possible: “A few months after discovering recordings by Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans, we decided to return to the Netherlands to deepen our research. During this second trip we found this incredible 1958 recording of Art Blakey. We feared the sound quality might not be particularly good, but we were mistaken: the recording was exemplary, and ‘Moanin'’ seemed to be the finest version ever captured! We are extremely proud of the restoration work carried out on this now legendary album.”
“The Lost Recordings”, internationally acclaimed for preserving invaluable musical heritage and for the unmatched quality of its Phoenix-Mastering™ restorations, now releases this legendary concert for the first time in absolute reference quality. The “Sapphire Edition” comes as a double LP (33 rpm) on 200-gram transparent Ultimate Record® vinyl. The hand-numbered edition is strictly limited to 4,000 copies, and the luxurious box includes a 16-bit album download card. Lacquer cutting was personally handled by mastering engineer Kevin Gray.
