Aretha Franklin's “I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You” was the eleventh album by the unforgettable soul diva and her first with Atlantic Records. Prior to this album, Aretha Franklin was best known for her interpretations of Broadway songs and Hollywood standards. However, with her Atlantic debut, she became a true force in soul music. Released in 1967, the album marked her artistic and commercial breakthrough and included the first two of her 20 number one hits: “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You),” which became a million-seller within weeks, and her signature song “Respect,” originally penned by Otis Redding. This soon became an anthem for the women's and civil rights movements. But “I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You” contains other hits that make the album immortal: “Soul Serenade,” “Good Times,” “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man” and “A Change Is Gonna Come.”
Aretha Franklin made her first recordings as a gospel singer at the tender age of 14 and later became the most successful artist in the history of the Billboard charts. With an incredible 88 (!) singles in the Billboard charts, Aretha Franklin won 18 Grammy Awards, including “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance,” “Best Soul Gospel Performance” and “Best Rhythm & Blues Recording.” With over 75 million records sold worldwide, she is considered an American national treasure and was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
